You can change health insurer, and most people never do

Germany has dozens of statutory health insurers, and you are not obliged to stay with whichever one was opened for you on your first day.

The core benefits are identical across all of them, because the law sets them. The difference lies in two places. One is the additional contribution rate each fund sets for itself, which comes straight out of your pay. The other is the voluntary extras: dental allowances, prevention programmes, or better cover for particular treatments.

If you have been with the same fund for years, look at two or three others once and compare their additional rate against yours. Ask your current insurer about the notice period and conditions for switching. And before you move, if you have treatment underway, make sure any approvals already granted carry across.
