The services you are asked to pay for, and do not have to accept

Here is a common moment that catches people out. At the practice you are offered a test or an examination that public insurance does not cover and that you would pay for in cash. The formal name for these is individual health services.

Know a few things about them. They are optional, and declining has no effect on the treatment your insurance does cover. You must be given a written agreement with the price before anything is done. And if the same procedure turns out to be medically necessary, it is normally covered by insurance and stops being one of these paid extras at all.

So when something is offered, ask three things. Why do I need this, what happens if I do not have it, and is there a version of this that insurance covers. You are not required to decide on the spot, and saying you will think about it and call back is a complete answer.

Darmstadt and Frankfurt are one catchment

Darmstadt is about twenty minutes from Frankfurt by train, and many people make that journey daily. The list of doctors here is short, and confining the search to the city boundary narrows your choice for nothing.

If you commute anyway, a practice near a station in Frankfurt may be more workable than one on the edge of Darmstadt. Door-to-door time is the right measure, and for somebody already on that line it is close to nothing.

Nothing about looking is recorded. Which profiles you open is not stored, and who contacted a practice is never published. A review is the only thing that reaches other readers, with whatever name you put on it.

A good review covers what anybody can assess: the wait, the punctuality, how clear they were about costs, and whether the doctor explained things to the end. If you were offered a paid service and the price was clear from the start, say so. The next reader will want to know.
