Ask for the active ingredient, not the brand name
This is one of the most useful things to learn about German medicines, and almost nobody tells a newcomer.
A doctor generally prescribes the active ingredient rather than a brand, and the pharmacy is required to dispense the cheapest product your insurer has a contract for. So the medicine you collected last month can arrive this month in a different box under a different name while being exactly the same thing.
That is unsettling, particularly with blood pressure or heart medication. The fix is simple. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to write down the active ingredient and the dose, keep that note, and check each new box against it. The same name is what you will need if you travel to Iran, where the brand names are different again. And if a substitute affects you differently, tell your doctor, because for medical reasons the substitution can be restricted.
Hanau is closer than it looks
Hanau lies to the east of the Rhine-Main region, about twenty minutes from central Frankfurt by train. Confining your search to the town boundary keeps your options needlessly small.
The right measure is how often you will go. For a specialist you see once a year, Frankfurt is effectively next door. For a GP, or for treatment that repeats weekly, stay near home. That one distinction sorts out most searches.
