What the Verified badge does and does not say

Verified says one thing only: a real person stands behind this profile and manages it themselves. YabInfy does not check anyone's certificates, licences, experience or competence, and the badge is not for sale.

Carpet dealing is not a licensed trade in Germany, and no chamber certifies that a rug is what the seller says it is. The closest thing to an official opinion is a publicly appointed and sworn expert. The Berlin chamber of commerce appoints such experts across many fields, and they are listed in the nationwide chamber register of sworn experts. For a rug at a serious price, that opinion is the only independent document you can obtain.

You can tell hand-knotted from machine-made yourself

You do not need an eye for this. Turn the rug over and look at the back. On a hand-knotted piece the pattern reads almost as clearly from behind as from the front, and the knots are slightly irregular. On a machine-made one the back is flat and the pattern is blurred.

Then look at the fringe. On a hand-knotted rug the fringe is the warp itself coming out of the weave. If it is a strip sewn onto the edge, the rug is machine-made. Count the knots across a few centimetres and ask the seller for the same number: a gap between the two answers tells you something on its own.

Ask about the material separately. Wool, silk and what gets called art silk or viscose can look alike and are nothing alike in durability or price. Whatever they tell you, ask for it in writing on the invoice.

In Berlin the problem is transport, not distance

Berlin is large, but getting to the shop is not your difficulty. Getting the rug home is. A three-by-four metre carpet does not travel on the U-Bahn, and it does not go easily into an ordinary car either.

So ask before you go whether they deliver and what it costs, because it usually comes to less than hiring a van for an afternoon. If you are sending a rug out to be washed, ask whether they collect and return it or whether that is on you, and how many days they will have it.

Ask before you pay

• What goes on the invoice? The region or place of weaving, the material, the dimensions and the approximate age should all be written down.
• If you take it home and it does not work in the room, will they take it back? A purchase made in the shop carries no statutory right of withdrawal, so agree this at the counter.
• Is the rug new or second hand, and if it has been repaired, where?
• For washing, what method do they use, and who carries the risk if the colours run?
• YabInfy checks none of this, so ask for it yourself, and ask to see the document where it matters.

If this group is not big enough for you

A carpet is a poor thing to buy from photographs. Colour shifts in a picture and the pile has to be handled. If Berlin has nothing for you, travelling to another city is the better answer rather than deciding from an image. Look at the other cities on this list, and call ahead to ask what sizes and types they actually have in stock before you make the trip.

Reviews and privacy

Nothing about looking is recorded. Browsing this list leaves no trace anyone can see, and we never show who approached which dealer. A review you write is the single public trace, and it carries the name you chose for it.

A useful carpet review says what was written on the invoice and whether what arrived matched it. If they washed a rug for you, say how many days it took and what condition it came back in.
