What the Verified badge does and does not say

Verified says one thing only: a real person stands behind this profile and manages it themselves. YabInfy does not check anyone's certificates, licences, experience or competence, and the badge is not for sale.

This trade needs no licence in Germany, and no body certifies that a carpet is genuine. The only independent opinion with official standing behind it comes from a publicly appointed and sworn expert. The Köln chamber of commerce appoints such experts, and they are listed in the nationwide chamber register of sworn experts.

Washing and repair, where most carpets are actually damaged

A hand-knotted rug cannot be cleaned like a fitted carpet. Vegetable dyes and some older colours bleed in hot water and alkaline products, and a rug whose colours have run does not come back. Proper washing uses cold or lukewarm water and mild products, and drying takes days rather than hours.

So settle three things before you hand a rug over. First, what method they use and whether they test the colours. Second, how long it will take, because anybody promising it back tomorrow is either using industrial drying or has not really washed it. Third, who carries the loss if the colours run or the rug shrinks, and whether it is insured while it is in their hands.

For repair work, photograph it first. Good repair is invisible from a metre away, and without a before picture you end up arguing about what was actually mended.

In Köln the real cost is the weeks the rug is not at home

Distances here are short and reaching a shop is easy. What people fail to plan for is that a rug sent out for washing or repair is gone from the room for weeks.

If it lives under the dining table or in the middle of the living room, pick a time of year when those weeks will not bother you. And ask at the outset whether they collect and return it or whether transport is your problem, because a van there and back can cost as much as the wash.

Ask before you hand it over or pay

• What goes on the receipt? The dimensions, the material and the condition of the rug before they take it should all be written down.
• When buying, will the weaving region and approximate age appear on the invoice?
• Is washing priced per square metre or as a flat job, and is repair billed separately?
• If the rug is old, is repair even worth it? An honest dealer will sometimes say no.

For this trade, the most useful review is about time. Were you told two weeks and did it take longer? What condition did the rug come back in? And when something went wrong, how did they handle it? That helps the next reader far more than an opinion about the pattern.
