Carpet dealing is not a licensed trade, and no state body certifies that a rug is genuine or what it is worth. The only independent opinion comes from a publicly appointed and sworn expert. The chamber of commerce for München and Upper Bavaria appoints such experts, and they can be found in the nationwide chamber register of sworn experts.

A carpet worth money is a carpet your insurer needs to know about

Few people think of this, and it matters more here than in most places, because prices and rents in this city are high and the rugs in people's homes tend to be more valuable.

Household contents insurance normally works to a ceiling, and for individual high-value items insurers usually want them declared and valued separately. If your rug is worth several thousand euros, keep the purchase invoice or an expert's opinion and ask your insurer whether it is covered as things stand or has to be listed. Without a document, the value after a fire or a burglary is whatever the insurer estimates it to be.

You will want the same paperwork if you ever sell. A rug with an invoice and written specifications sells more easily, and for more, years later.

In München, phone before you travel

Retail rents in the centre are heavy, and many dealers keep their stock in a warehouse elsewhere and show only part of it in the shop. So it is entirely possible to make the journey and find that what you came for is not on the premises.

One phone call removes that. Name the size and the type you are after and ask whether it can be seen that day or has to be brought in. If it has to be brought in, make an appointment, and ask at the same time whether that costs anything.

Ask before you pay

• Will the weaving region, the fibre, the dimensions and the approximate age be written on the invoice?
• For insurance, will they give you a document showing the value, or do you need a separate expert?
• What do delivery and carrying it upstairs cost? In an older building without a lift that is not a small number.
• If it is second hand, has it been washed, and has it been repaired? Ask them to show you where.

If you write one, say what ended up on the invoice and whether the price held from the first number to the last. Bargaining is normal in this trade. A price that changes after you have agreed it is a different thing, and the next reader should know.
