Visa and residence advice is not a travel agency's job

This has to be said plainly, because it happens often in our community and it sometimes proves expensive.

In Germany, giving legal advice is a service only authorised people may provide. Residence permits, visas, family reunification and renewals are legal matters. A travel agency can book your flight and help you fill in travel forms, but it is not entitled to advise you on strategy for a residence case or to tell you what to write and how.

That restriction works in your favour. Somebody who is not authorised also carries no liability for being wrong, and has no professional insurance behind them. If you complete a form incorrectly or miss a deadline on their word, the consequences are yours alone.

So keep the two apart. Go to an agency for tickets, travel insurance and hotel bookings. For anything touching residence or visas, go to a lawyer or an authorised advice centre. If an agency says it handles those too, ask on what basis, and take a vague answer seriously.

Frankfurt is close to the airport, which is both an advantage and a trap

Frankfurt has Germany's largest airport and most of the region's direct flights leave from it, which is why the agencies here know the Iran routes well.

But proximity to an airport does not make anything cheaper by itself. A ticket price depends on the date, the airline and the fare conditions, not on the agency's address. So get prices from two or three, and compare the change and cancellation terms rather than just the number, because on a trip to Iran those conditions matter more than the price.

Ask before you pay

• What is the final price with baggage and taxes?
• Can dates be changed, and what is the penalty?
• If it is a package, will you give me the security certificate?
• Do you advise on my residence case? If so, on what basis?

Say nothing about your residence status or your travel plans. Write instead about whether the pricing was transparent, whether documents were ready in time, and how they handled a change when one was needed. If an agency told you honestly that something was outside what they do, say that too, because it is a good sign.
