The bottle deposit, money that is yours and gets left behind

It usually takes new arrivals a few months to work out that part of what they handed over at the till was refundable. The amount looks small and adds up considerably over a year.

The rule is this. Many drinks bottles and cans carry a deposit, and you get that amount back when you return the empty. Some bottles are single-use and some are refillable, and the deposit differs. The packaging normally carries a symbol for it, and the return machines sit by the entrance of most supermarkets.

Two things confuse people. Wine bottles, juice bottles and most food jars carry no deposit and belong in the glass bank instead. And a crushed bottle or one with the label torn off will be rejected by the machine, so keep the empties intact. Hand the machine's receipt in at the till the same day, because finding it later in a pocket or a bag is its own small ordeal.

One related point. Some small shops refund the deposit only on the kinds of bottle they sell themselves, and that is lawful. If you have a lot of empties, taking them to a large supermarket is simpler, because the machine there accepts almost everything.

The river cuts Hamburg in two

The Elbe divides the city and the crossings are few. So a shop that looks close on a map can be much further away than the number suggests if it is on the other side of the water.

For heavy shopping, take that seriously. Choose the side of the river first and the shop second, ideally one that fits with something else you were doing on that bank. If you have no car, split a monthly shop into smaller ones, because carrying three bags on a train and a bus is an experience you only need once.

Ask before you buy

• Do you take phone orders and put things aside?
• Do you deliver, and from what order value?
• Which days do fresh herbs and bread arrive?
• Do you stock large sacks of rice and pulses?
