The price per kilo has to be on the label

It sounds like a small entitlement and it makes a real difference to a monthly shop.

In Germany, alongside the price of the packet, the price per unit has to be shown as well: per kilo or per litre. The reason is that a seven hundred gram packet and a one kilo packet cannot be compared by looking at the number on the box, and unusual pack sizes are designed with exactly that in mind.

So get into the habit of reading the smaller number on the label rather than the larger one. For rice, pulses, oil, dried fruit and above all saffron, the difference is striking. If a label has no unit price, ask. In small shops it sometimes gets missed, and there is nothing awkward about asking.

Apply the same to loose goods. When something is sold by weight, ask the price per kilo before it goes on the scale, because once it is bagged and labelled the conversation gets harder.

The same attention pays off elsewhere. Buy-two-get-one offers and family packs are not automatically cheaper, and their price per kilo is sometimes higher than the ordinary packet. That small number on the label settles it.

Köln's shops are spread out and the tram gets you there

Köln covers a lot of ground but has a dense tram network reaching most districts from the centre, so getting to a shop is rarely the main problem.

Carrying it is. If you have a heavy shop and no car, ask whether they deliver, because many Iranian shops do and it works out cheaper than a taxi. And if you are shopping for a gathering, order a day or two ahead so that what you want is actually there.

• Do you deliver, and from what order value?
• Which days do fresh herbs and bread arrive?
• If something is out of stock, will you order it for me?

Write about price and transparency. Whether prices were on the shelf or you had to ask, whether the unit price was shown, and whether the till charged what the label said. For a monthly shop those matter more than anything else.
