Hygiene inspection happens, but you will not see a grade on the door

In some countries restaurants are given a hygiene score and have to display it by the entrance. Germany has nothing equivalent nationwide, which leads many people to assume there is no inspection either.

There is. The city's food safety office visits unannounced and follows up on breaches. What does not exist is automatic, across-the-board publication of the outcome, so as a customer you generally cannot see that report.

Which means your own judgement is what you have. A clean toilet, tables actually wiped between customers, a display fridge that is cold rather than merely lit, and a kitchen visible from the room are all signals. If something looks seriously wrong to you, you can report it to the city's food safety office, and doing so is ordinary and accepted.

One more point belongs here and gets little thought. Do not leave a takeaway or leftovers in the car or in a bag, and get them into a fridge quickly. Cooked rice left at room temperature for hours becomes genuinely risky, and that happens in our own kitchens far more often than in the restaurant.

Essen sits in the middle of a chain of cities

Essen is in the centre of the Ruhr, and the other large cities are minutes away on the city rail. The registered group of Iranian food businesses here is small, so limiting your search to the city boundary makes little sense.

For an evening out, going to the next city along is genuinely no trouble, and the trains run at night too, just less often. Check the time of the last train back before you go, because that is the one thing that ruins an otherwise good evening.

Ask before you order

• Which day of the week do you close, and when is last orders?
• Is a booking needed for a large group, and from how many people?
• Do you do takeaway, and is it the same quality?
• Do you take cards, or is it cash only?

Nothing about looking is recorded. Reading a restaurant's page leaves no record, and we never publish who visited whom. The only thing that reaches other people is your own review, under a name you set.

If you write one, give observable detail rather than a general verdict. How clean the room and the toilets were, how fast the service was, whether the food arrived hot. If you saw something seriously wrong on hygiene, the place for that is a report to the city office, not one star fewer.
