What the Verified badge does and does not say

Verified says one thing only: a real person stands behind this profile and manages it themselves. The two documents nobody likes to think about

If you ever cannot decide for yourself, your spouse or your children do not automatically get to decide for you in Germany. That runs against what most families assume, and it comes to light at the worst possible moment.

Two documents settle it. One is a healthcare power of attorney, naming the person who speaks to the doctors and decides on your behalf. The other is an advance directive, in which you set out which treatment you want and which you do not. To be usable in a hospital they need to be written and in German, and a copy has to be somewhere findable in an emergency rather than at the back of a drawer.

A GP cannot draw these up for you, but they can talk through the medical side, and that conversation alone is worth having. If your family is spread across two countries, do not put this off.

A small city on the edge of a crowded area

Speyer is a small city in southern Rhineland-Palatinate, and Mannheim and Ludwigshafen are not far. The list of doctors here is short, so looking at them makes sense.

One administrative point. Ludwigshafen is in this state, but Mannheim is in Baden-Württemberg, and a doctor there works under a different chamber and a different association of statutory health insurance physicians. That changes nothing about treatment or insurance, but for weekend cover you need to know whose system applies to you. Ask the practice once and it is settled.

• Will they take the time to explain the medical side of a power of attorney and an advance directive?
• Will they keep a copy of those documents in your file?
• If your GP is in another state, whose out-of-hours system covers your weekend?

If this group is not big enough for you

Mannheim and Ludwigshafen are both close and have their own lists on this site, and Mainz is reachable by train. Stay local for a GP. For a specialty you need once or twice a year, half an hour is nothing.

In a city this size, use a short name and leave out identifying detail. Write instead about how long you waited for an appointment, whether the practice ran to time, and whether they had patience when you brought a difficult question.
