Paying in Germany still has its own rules

This catches new arrivals out in restaurants more than anything else does.

First, plenty of small restaurants are still cash only, or take a German debit card but not a credit card. Ask before you sit down, because hunting for a cash machine after the meal makes nobody happy.

Second, paying separately is completely normal here. One person does not have to settle the whole bill for everyone to divide up afterwards. Just say separately when the bill comes.

Third, the tip. In Germany it is usually somewhere around five to ten per cent, and it is said out loud as you pay: you name the total you want to pay and take the change. Leaving money on the table and walking out is not the custom here and is occasionally read as rude.

And a last word about receipts. If you are paying for work or for a group and you want one, say so as you pay. A printed receipt is not always handed over automatically in Germany, and asking for it after you have left is difficult.

Hannover is a city with a clear centre

Unlike the Ruhr, Hannover has one obvious middle and the tram network connects everything to it, so getting to a restaurant is usually straightforward.

What is different about this city's calendar is the trade fairs. In fair weeks the city fills up, hotels and restaurants go with it, and a table without a call beforehand becomes hard to find. If you are planning something for the family, ring a week ahead.

• Do you take cards, and which ones?
• Is it a problem to split the bill for a group?
• Does a large group need to order in advance?
• Which day do you close, and when is last orders?

If this group is not big enough for you

The set registered in Hannover is small and does not cover every taste. Bremen and Hamburg are reachable by train and have their own lists on this site, though for an ordinary dinner that is a long way. The more practical route is the grocers list and cooking at home.

Nothing about looking is recorded. Looking at a restaurant's page is not recorded, and nobody is told where you ate. The only public part is your own review, under a name you choose.

Write the things that are useful before you go: whether they take cards, whether there is room for a family group, and whether the room is quiet enough to talk in. Nobody writes those, and everybody looks for them.
