When a practice is shut, read the note on the door

German practices take holidays and close while they do. That surprises people who have recently arrived and expect somewhere to always be open.

The rule is that a doctor must name a colleague covering for them while they are away. The name and address are usually on the door, on the answering machine, or on their website. That covering practice will see you on the same insurance and can renew a repeat prescription.

Do two things in advance. If you take medication that must not be interrupted, get enough before the holiday rather than waiting for the last day. And if you have treatment underway, ask the practice when their closures fall. Asking is completely normal and nobody takes it badly.

In Schleswig-Holstein the distances are real

Kiel is the largest city in the state, and the state is wide and thinly populated. Unlike the Ruhr or Rhine-Main, there is no neighbouring city half an hour away, so you cannot simply widen the search to the next town along.

Your nearest genuine alternative is Hamburg, about an hour away by train, with a much longer list. For a specialist opinion once a year, that hour is acceptable. For a GP and for repeating treatment it is not, so find those in Kiel itself.

Before you think about Hamburg, phone the Kiel practices and ask whether anybody on the team speaks Persian. Our list only holds people who registered themselves, and the city is larger than our list. There is a university hospital here too, so most specialties exist even where we do not know of a Persian-speaking doctor in them.

Nothing about looking is recorded. What you read here is not stored, and who approached a practice is never displayed. A review is the one public record, and you decide which name goes on it. The Persian-speaking circle here is not a wide one, so a short name is the sensible choice.

Keep the review practical: how long you waited for an appointment, whether the practice ran to time, and whether the holiday cover was properly signposted when you needed it. That last one is worth a great deal to the next reader.
