Every district in Berlin, from Wedding in Mitte to Lichtenberg in the east, has its own practices. But here, everything comes down to distance. From Neukölln to Pankow during peak hours, even with U-Bahn or S-Bahn, you are looking at thirty minutes or more. That distance which looks short on a map is far more real in the actual city.

What distance means in this city

Berlin is split into districts (Bezirke), and "near my home" means something different in each one. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn close the distance, but only shrinks distance so much. A practice in Kreuzberg may be 20 minutes by bus from your door, but the same practice from Pankow or Treptow can take 45 minutes or more. In Berlin, actual travel time differs from map distance.

• Is the practice still accepting patients with your public insurance under KV Berlin? Many Berlin practices are at capacity and may not take new statutory patients even if the doctor is licensed. Ask before you travel.
• Does the practice have an offene Sprechstunde? Some Berlin practices hold open consultation hours where you can walk in without a prior appointment. Check the practice website or KV Berlin for the schedule.
• Is the practice near a U-Bahn, S-Bahn, or bus stop? Most people in Berlin rely on public transport. BVG access matters.

• Is the practice in your Bezirk or a nearby one? Sometimes the nearest Hausarzt is in a neighbouring Bezirk and the travel time through the BVG network is shorter than a practice further in your own district.
