The thing about gold in Germany that surprises people from Iran

In Iran the fineness stamp on gold work follows a defined system. In Germany there is no such obligation. German law does not require a seller to stamp gold or silver with its fineness, and an unstamped piece can be sold perfectly legally. If a stamp is applied, it has to state the real fineness in thousandths, but its absence is not an offence.

The practical consequence is clear enough. No stamp does not mean fake, and a stamp on its own is not a guarantee. What actually protects you is the invoice. Ask for the fineness, the exact weight in grams, and the making charge shown separately from the metal price. If you ever sell the piece or insure it, that sheet of paper is your evidence.

For anything set with stones, ask for the stone's weight and description in writing too, and where the sum is large, ask whether it comes with a laboratory certificate.

In Berlin, comparing is worth the afternoon

The Iranian shops here sit in several separate parts of the city rather than in one bazaar, so comparing prices means an afternoon of travelling. For everyday shopping that is not worth it. For gold and for formal clothes it is.

Phone before you set off and ask two things: whether what you want is actually in stock, and what today's gram price and making charge are. The gold price moves daily, and that short call is what saves you a wasted journey across the city.

Ask before you pay

• Will the fineness and exact weight go on the invoice? Watch the piece go on the scale in front of you.
• What is the making charge, and is it calculated separately from the metal?
• If you want to sell the same piece back later, will they buy it, and at what discount?
• For clothing, do they alter sizes, how long does it take, and is it charged on top?

If this group is not big enough for you

For formal and bridal wear, having something made is the more usual route here than hunting for a ready size, and the tailors on this site's other lists are worth looking at for that. For gold, get a price on the phone before travelling to another city and hold it against what Berlin quoted you.

Nothing about looking is recorded. Browsing this list leaves no trace anyone can see, and we never show who approached which shop. Nothing is published unless you write a review, and then only under the name you picked.

If you write one, leave your own numbers out of it. It is enough to say whether you were given a complete invoice, whether the piece was weighed in front of you, and how they handled it when something was wrong. Those three tell the next reader more than any description of the stock.
