The distinction most customers never hear about

German trade law splits crafts into two groups, and hairdressing and cosmetics fall on opposite sides of the line. Hairdressing is licensed: you cannot open a salon without a master craftsman's certificate or a recognised equivalent, and the business has to appear in the chamber's register. Cosmetic treatment is not licensed, and no qualification is legally required to offer it at all.

That single split explains most of the complaints you hear in the Persian-speaking community. The person doing your brows or a facial may have fifteen years behind them or may have started last month, and the law does not distinguish between the two. So for cutting and colouring you can ask about the trade registration. For skin work, asking and looking at their actual results is the only check there is.

Distance is a weak excuse in this city

Düsseldorf is compact and its tram and city rail network connects most neighbourhoods to the centre. For something you do a handful of times a year, an extra half hour each way to reach a salon whose work you actually like is a trade worth making.

What costs you time here is not the journey, it is the appointment. Colour work runs two to three hours, and the busy salons fill their weekend slots weeks ahead. If a weekday slot is possible for you, take it. It is usually cheaper, and the salon is working on fewer people at once.

Ask before you sit down

• Get the price before anything starts. Salons are expected to have a price list where customers can see it, and if there is none on the wall, ask for the number first.
• Does the colour price change with hair length? This is where most billing arguments begin.
• Which products do they use, and will they do a patch test if your skin reacts to things?
• For bridal and event styling, is it done in the salon or at your address, and what happens if you cancel?

If this group is not big enough for you

Düsseldorf and Köln are forty kilometres apart and about half an hour by regional train, so if the salon you want is not on the Düsseldorf list, Köln is a realistic alternative rather than a theoretical one.
